Feb 2010 Ms. Marci's first grade is holding a presidential election to incorporate with our studies of the President's of the United States. Any student wishing to run for President or Vice President has created a campaign poster, with the help of their campaign manager. The political hopeful will also address their constituents and list three reasons why they would be the best candidate to elect. Some of the student's shared the reasons they would make a dynamic President or Vice President: Sana has decided she would be a great president because she would make money for the class. Daisy believes that she would be the best candidate because she believes everyone is beautiful! Emily has several reasons for people to vote for her: she is pretty, she believes the job would be fun, and she is smart! Lauren thinks the toughest issues facing her would be to help people that are in need. Lance thinks his strength is his great personality. November of 2009 Dear parents, We had another wonderful day of electives. I have listed what the children learned below. Art: we learned that art is made of lines and that lines create movement. We talked about the different kinds of movement and the types of mediums used for art. We chose watercolor to use today. Their pictures were just beautiful! Everyone had the opportunity to tell me about their painting and where the movement was, however they were so good I could tell what movement they were conveying! Our vocabulary word was zigzag. That is a line that has a sharp turn thus creating movement. Computers: Ms. Sara's class did an very innovative and challenging activity on the computers. The children love this time! Spanish: the children went over last weeks lesson as well as working on their numbers, how to say their age in Spanish, and working on other conversational phrases. The children did have flashcards and homework for Spanish class. We are having a ball teaching these classes and the children seem to really be enjoying them! -- Warmly, Marci Meyer 1st grade We've been studying Native Americans of the Northwest Coast, who are known for their totem poles that tell about their family. We created our own totem poles about our families. Each animal totem means something specific, and the kids chose these totems to represent members of their families. The kids put a lot of thought into choosing the totems, and I think they turned out well! -- Rachel Burgess Second Grade Teacher Treetops School www.treetops.org Where else does 2nd Grade get to study erosion and the importance of roots by observing our own campus? The children continue to strengthen their skills in observation. We are keeping notes in our Science Journals as we watch our beans grow. Each student is tracking the growth of their own beans. This has proven to be an ongoing experiment We are learning to describe with words as well as pictures. My favorite part of this week was introducing Cesar Chavez to the class. Friday we made a mosaic inspired by Cesar Chavez's Glue and paper everywhere, but the end result was great. The Act of Kindness Jar has been filled -that means the class will be making no bake cookies on Friday Treetops Middle School Volunteers at the Samaritan House of Ft. Worth Each month eight middle school students travel to the Samaritan house of Ft. Worth as volunteers. The Samaritan House is a non-profit organization that provides services and residences to people living with HIV and AIDS. The students help out by cleaning the common areas, organizing materials, and maintaining the grounds around the facility. While there, they also receive valuable information to help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS. September 2009 First Grade Elective Classes: During the summer, our team decided to offer rotating elective classes for our grade level. We feel that our classroom routines and schedules have been established and we are now ready to begin our electives! Each Wednesday, the first grade classes will rotate through each teacher's room. We will be offering computer technology, fine arts, and foreign language. We are excited to be able to offer these opportunities to our students and we hope that they enjoy it! First Grade At Home Projects: Fall Collage: Each child will bring what they have collected in a bag and share it with the class. After we all share, we will be gluing our items on a large turkey and make a class fall collage. Save A Turkey: We are desperately trying to save a turkey from its Thanksgiving demise! Your child has been kind enough to adopt one of the class turkeys. You will find it in their folder. Please cut the turkey out of the card stock and help to disguise it. We don't want anyone to know that it is, in fact, a turkey! Please be creative and use whatever materials your imagination allows! Friendship Feast-we will be discussing manners and friendship this week. This unit of study will culminate with a feast of snacks, while we model our table manners and table conversations! Stone Soup-we will study and discuss the meaning behind Stone Soup, the dynamics of a group and team work, and how one act of kindness can change the path of a community! Hot Chocolate and Cookie Buffet will be enjoyed by the first grade classes to culminate our unit study of gingerbread men. We will study, count, and measure our gingerbread counters. We will also brain storm ideas for and write a story, using proper story elements, that continues the escapades of our favorite little cookie! We will enjoy a cup of hot chocolate with choices of chocolate chips, candy canes, marshmallows, and hot syrup to add to it! Spring~First Grade Rodeo during western week.
